Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami is no more




2011 will be marked in black in Assam's history as we lost another great Assamese personality today, Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami, after Dr Bhupen Hazarika.

Considered not only as one of the greatest author from the region but also as great human being, Dr Mamoni Raison Goswami passes away on 29th November, 2011 at around 7-30 am in Guwahati Medical Hospital. She was 69 and has been suffering from ailment for last many months.

Born as Indira Goswami in 14th Novemeber, 1942 in Guwahati, daughter to Late Umakanta Goswami, she was a talented student. She went to Shillong for schooling. She later did her studies in Assamese Literature in Cotton College. Her first book was published as early as 1962 when she was a student.

Indira Goswami started all her writings in the pen name of Mamoni Raisom Goswami. In 1982 she won Sahitya Academy award and in 2000 the highest honor in Indian Literature, "Jnanpith". Her work in Indian Mythology specially in Ramayana brought international fame to the author and also to Assam.

Another face of the Dr. Goswami was her activites towards social upliftment of the region. She was pioneer in starting the peace process between ULFA and the government. Till her last breath, she was involved in social service. A day before her death she was informed about her project to convert the primary health centre (PHC) at Amranga, her ancestral village, into a 30-bedded hospital. She donated. Rs 35 lakh towards the construction of the hospital from the sum she received in Netherlands when she was honoured with the Prince Claus Award in 2008.

Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami's loss has created a huge void in Assamese literature and society. But her work will always be there in the very bottom of every Assamese's hearts.
